Have you ever had a title you needed
a few hundred copies of, but could not justify the cost
of a litho run?
Mega Digital’s print on demand (POD) option is the
right choice.
Mega Digital is a specialist
digital print house, servicing the needs of publishers,
advertising agencies and graphic designers.
The technology we employ allows us to cost effectively
produce short run printed matter as and when required,
rather than printing for the warehouse.
Digital printing allows for personalisation, which is
not possible with conventional litho printing.
At Mega, we believe
that digital technology is the future of printing. No
more plates, taped-together proofs on the wrong paper
and long lead times.
In days gone by it wouldn’t have been possible for
a self-publisher to cost effectively produce 50 or 100
copies of their book. I’ve heard of people bonding
their houses to pay for a print run of thousands of copies
so that they could get the unit cost down, in the hope
that their book will sell when they’re done. Talk
about “living on the edge”! I don’t
think I’d be that brave...
But with digital it can be done. Print 100 copies and
see how it goes. If it turns out to be a best seller,
print 10 000 after that!
It’s not only self-publishers who use that logic
– most of the work we do is for major publishing
companies who want to reduce their stock sitting in the
warehouse and the potential stock write-offs that go with
that. Warehousing is expensive, and if you can order only
the quantity you want when you want it, these costs can
be reduced.
Digital is used for marketing copies in much the same
way that a self-publisher would print an initial run.
The market can be explored on a very conservative level
until orders for much bigger quantities are confirmed.
Avoiding having to print long runs means that the publisher’s
capital is not tied up in potentially useless stock. It
means that this capital can be used to introduce other
titles to the market which may produce income.
There is a demand for niche publications which can be
produced in smaller numbers.
With digital, there is no need for a title to ever go
“out of print” no matter how small the demand
is.
At the moment Mega has the capacity to scan in the region
of 400 black and white pages per minute at 600dpi. Colour
pages can be scanned at 39 pages per minute.
Don’t let
the lack of a digital file or film stop you from getting
all those old titles back on the list! |
